Laura Tavolacci is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at UC Davis, studying South Asia and the British Empire. Her dissertation, titled “Agriculture as Redemption: the Evangelical Building Blocks of Development,” investigates a group of British Baptist missionaries in early colonial India. She argues that these missionaries, in conflict and collaboration with different groups of Indians, created a space devoted to both economic and moral improvement which influenced the birth of a British civilizing mission.

Her research interests include: History of South Asia, History of the British Empire, Comparative Empires, History of Ireland, History of Missionaries, History of Agriculture and Science, Political Economy, and the Transformation from Early Modern to Modern.
